Unpublished 1990s Magic: The Gathering RPG manuscript up for auction

An unfinished tabletop RPG based on Magic: The Gathering from the 1990s is being auctioned by its former designer, with proceeds going to Planned Parenthood. The game, titled Manastorm: The Magic Adventure game, was shelved after Wizards of the Coast acquired TSR in 1997. The manuscript includes rules, appendices, and character sheets.

In the mid-1990s, Wizards of the Coast explored developing a tabletop role-playing game tied to its popular card game Magic: The Gathering. Plans for the project, initiated around 1996, were abandoned following the company's acquisition of TSR in 1997, as focus shifted away from in-house roleplaying titles.

The game, known as Manastorm: The Magic Adventure game, was designed as a card-based tabletop RPG. Players would use hero decks to represent characters and adventure decks to influence gameplay events. The manuscript now available was authored by Wolfgang Baur of Kobold Press, along with Teeuwynn Woodruff and Mike Selinker of Lone Shark Games, during their tenure at Wizards.

Jonathan Tweet, a former Wizards employee and game designer, is auctioning the unpublished draft. The materials comprise 68 pages of rules, 165 pages of appendices, and additional loose character sheets and handouts. Tweet announced the auction on social media, stating proceeds would support the non-profit Planned Parenthood.

As of March 9, 2026, the auction had raised $1,872. Tweet noted that the bidding process has since become silent, with further offers accepted via direct messages. Limited details survive from the era, including a 2007 forum post from a playtester confirming the project's cancellation post-acquisition.

This auction highlights early experimental efforts in blending card mechanics with RPG elements, predating similar designs in later games.
