Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard won the sixth stage of the Volta a Catalunya from Berga to Queralt with a decisive attack 2.4 km from the finish. This secures him the overall victory with one stage remaining. Lenny Martínez and Florian Lipowitz complete the podium.
Jonas Vingegaard of Visma-Lease a Bike dominated the sixth stage of the Volta a Catalunya, from Berga to the Santuario de Queralt. During the stage, which featured the demanding Coll de Pradell with 23% gradients, Vingegaard stayed sheltered by his teammates until the final climb. At 2.4 km to go, he surged powerfully, dropping Lenny Martínez (BHR Victorious) and Florian Lipowitz (RBH ProCycling).
An initial breakaway included 15 riders, such as Marc Soler, Richard Carapaz, Matteo Cattaneo, and Giulio Ciccone. Bora tried to toughen the race with attacks from Onley, Gall, and Lipowitz, while Remco Evenepoel aided his teammate. However, Visma, assisted by Nordhagen, Piganzoni, and Sepp Kuss, maintained control. Vingegaard had stated he aimed to win everything possible.
Notable abandons included Tom Pidcock from the previous stage after a crash, and Novak (Movistar) before neutralization. In Berga, fans and figures like Nani Roma, Juanjo Oroz, Purito Rodríguez, and Perico Delgado supported the teams. Vingegaard, who kisses his family-stickered bike, received cheers alongside Kuss, popular locally.
The general classification has Vingegaard leading by 1:22 over Martínez and 1:30 over Lipowitz. The overall victory will be celebrated Sunday on Montjuïc hills, adding to his golden record.
