Samwel Macharia: Body of missing Mt Kenya porter found after 18 days

Kenya Wildlife Service has recovered the body of veteran porter Samwel Macharia, missing since December 23 on Mt Kenya's Sirimon-Shipton route, from Hinde Valley after an 18-day search amid harsh conditions. This update follows extensive efforts involving family pleas and suspicions of altitude-related illness, as previously reported.

Macharia, a 35-year-old with 15 years' experience also known as a guide, vanished between Old Moses and Shipton's Camps while with porters, guides, and two Japanese clients. He left his ID, phone, and supplies behind, prompting a massive search by KWS Mountain Search and Rescue Unit, National Police, and family—including brother Daniel Kagwaini and aunt Lucy Kagwaini—who suspected high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE).

The operation covered Shipton Camp, Austrian Hut, Mackinder's Valley, Sendeyo, Hinde Valley, Mintos, and Timau Route, battling extreme weather and terrain. On January 9, 2026, his remains were located at 4,300m in Hinde Valley, off the main trail.

KWS stated: “Immediately upon receipt of the report on 23rd December 2025, KWS activated its Mountain Search and Rescue Unit, in line with its mandate to ensure visitor safety and emergency response within protected mountain ecosystems.” The agency extended condolences to Macharia's family, fellow porters, guides, and the Mt Kenya community.

The incident underscores the dangers of Mt Kenya climbing and KWS's critical rescue role.
