Deputy PM Temesgen Tiruneh hails police sector reform

Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh announced that a police force with public participation and effective duty fulfillment has been formed through security sector reform. He made the remarks at the 20th Police Commissioners Conference in Addis Ababa. The reform aims to professionalize police and create a strong institution.

Addis Ababa, Megabit 29, 2018 (EF EM SI) – Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh addressed the 20th Police Commissioners Conference under the theme "Police Unity for Lasting Peace".

He stated that police sector reform, one of the outcomes of national consultations, has professionalized officers, provided training, and built a strong police institution.

Temesgen emphasized that police must be loyal and accountable to the government, the public, and themselves. Security forces should exercise legal authority, protect rights, and conduct investigations transparently with high morale.

The reform has protected casualties from Banda and Bada forces and enabled arrests of enemy agents handing them to the law without disruptions, he noted.

Ahead of the 7th general election, he urged the public and security forces to ensure a democratic, peaceful, and free vote. Security institutions will monitor disruptions and protect candidates to facilitate an uninterrupted process.
