Ethiopian authorities intensify fight against social media disinformation

Ethiopian media authority officials have released a national report highlighting intensified efforts to curb hate speech and disinformation on social media. The report examines high-engagement content on platforms including Facebook, TikTok, Telegram, X and YouTube. Authorities emphasize ongoing advancements in monitoring and response mechanisms.

Addis Ababa, March 18, 2018 (EF EM SI) – Officials from Ethiopia's Media Authority have issued a national report on the current state of hate speech and disinformation spreading on social media, stating that their countermeasures are gaining momentum.

The report focuses on five key platforms—Facebook, TikTok, Telegram, X, and YouTube—analyzing high-engagement, high-volume content in major cities and two regional administrations. It draws from public opinion surveys and 9,192 complaints received via the hotline 9192.

Authority Director General Weyzero Haymanot Zeleqe stated, "The report examines the existing situation of hate speech and disinformation on social media, along with emerging trends over time, to inform solution strategies."

Officials highlighted the use of human moderation technology alongside modern monitoring, blocking, and support procedures. These efforts aim to safeguard national peace, development, and the upcoming 7th national election. They urged social media service providers and institutions to fulfill their responsibilities, including boosting public information literacy.

Looking ahead, authorities plan to integrate artificial intelligence for content detection, enhance technological capabilities, and strengthen reporting, monitoring, and support systems. The initiative calls for collective accountability from all institutions and citizens to combat disinformation effectively.
