Ethiopian national electoral board functions and responsibilities

The Ethiopian National Electoral Board is an independent constitutional body established under Article 102 of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Constitution. The board has conducted six national elections, four regional elections, and nine referendums.

The Ethiopian National Electoral Board has organized federal and regional secretariats since its establishment, with offices in all regions, city administrations, and at the federal level. Starting from Tahsas 2011 E.C. (approximately December 2018), the board underwent restructuring under a new sponsoring law approved by the House of Peoples' Representatives, shifting to five full-time members from the previous setup. The board's secretariat is managed internally, with each member's term lasting six years.

Under Proclamation 1133/2011, the board's powers and functions include conducting elections and referendums impartially, registering and overseeing political organizations, allocating financial support, organizing polling stations, verifying results, and resolving complaints. Additionally, it grants accreditation to observers, conducts by-elections, and handles legal challenges. The board also proposes amendments to election laws and submits reports to the House of Peoples' Representatives. It ensures free and fair elections at all levels through preparation, monitoring, and logistical arrangements.
