Ethiopians head to the polls on June 1 for the national election amid minimal international monitoring. The European Union has sent no observers while the African Union and IGAD provide limited presence.
The seventh national election is scheduled for Monday, June 1, 2026. Officials from the National Election Board of Ethiopia have noted that the African Union deployed a short-term delegation and IGAD sent 26 regional experts.
NEBE representatives stated that the quality, independence, and meaning of observation findings matter more than the number of observers. They downplayed the lack of Western missions.
The European Union, which previously sent monitoring teams, has no presence at these polls.
