Gambela region gives special attention to irrigated crops supporting food security

The Gambela region's agriculture bureau has given special attention to irrigated agricultural products that bolster food security in lowland areas. In the 2018/19 irrigated crop season, over 180,000 hectares were cultivated, yielding more than 5.8 million quintals for distribution, officials stated.

Addis Ababa, Miyazya 18, 2018 (Fana) - Gambela region's agriculture and natural resources development bureau announced special attention to irrigated crops supporting food security in lowland irrigated farming.

Bureau head Ato Andriw Tut said the 2018/19 irrigated crop production cultivated over 180,000 hectares, yielding more than 5.8 million quintals for distribution. Officials appreciated the focus on these products.

Beans stand out as a key crop bolstering food security, alongside sesame, maize, rice, and other cereals receiving attention. Agricultural projects are underway across the region's nine zones to cultivate planned land during the production season.

With the goal of supplying all farmers with seeds, intensive efforts are being made. To enhance irrigated agriculture effectiveness, farm inputs are distributed, and training provided to administrators and experts, the bureau told Fana Digital.
