Koppanen appeared in 13 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins last season after also suiting up for the Boston Bruins. He described his path to the NHL as difficult, with extended time in the AHL before debuting. In an interview, Koppanen said he is glad he did not give up during those challenging periods. He praised Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin as impressive teammates who treat everyone equally. Koppanen recalled a physical encounter with Alexander Ovechkin during a game against Washington. He now looks forward to contributing defensively for Luleå while developing his offensive game, influenced by positive feedback from Finnish contacts about the club and city.
