New SIMAK association launched to protect farm workers' rights in Kenya

The Social Impact Management Association of Kenya (SIMAK) has been launched in Nairobi to ensure workers' rights and affected communities are protected in agricultural and development projects.

Acting Chairman Professor Edward Ontita said at the launch that the goal is to have social management officers in every major project from the planning stage.

He noted that large agricultural farms face gender-based violence, low wages and poor working conditions, with workers lacking clean water and freedom to join unions.

Dr Lynett Ochuma from the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection said the government is preparing a national policy to be presented to Parliament as a bill to align with international standards and address workers' rights along with fair land acquisition.
