Sha approves nine overseas hospitals for treatment from April 14

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has agreed with nine hospitals in India, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia to offer overseas treatment from April 14. Kenyans can claim up to Ksh500,000 for 36 procedures unavailable locally. SHA CEO Mercy Mwangangi announced this on Citizen TV.

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has signed deals with nine hospitals abroad to launch an overseas treatment package next week. SHA CEO Mercy Mwangangi said, “We’re very pleased to inform Kenyans that starting on the 14th of April, we will now be able to have Kenyans come to SHA and access the overseas package.” She spoke on Citizen TV on April 10.

Turkey has four hospitals from the Acıbadem Healthcare Group, including Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University Atakent Hospital, Acıbadem Maslak Hospital, Acıbadem Altunizade Hospital, and Acıbadem Adana Hospital. India features KIMS Hospitals and Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in Chennai. Saudi Arabia includes Dr Soliman Fakeeh Hospital in Jeddah and King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre.

Health CS Aden Duale stated SHA will cover only procedures unavailable in Kenya. The Benefits Package and Tariffs Advisory Panel (BPTAP) identified 36 such procedures, capped at Ksh500,000.

The process starts with local assessment in Kenya, followed by submission to SHA, membership verification, treatment up to the limit, and follow-up care back home.
