The multi-vehicle collision occurred around 11pm on Friday, January 2, 2026, in the Konza City area of Machakos County along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. It involved a Loitoktok-bound shuttle, a lorry, and a Tahmeed bus from Mombasa. Survivors described how their shuttle driver attempted to overtake another vehicle, leading to a head-on collision between a Nissan and the bus.

One survivor traveling in the shuttle recounted: "Our driver is the one who was on the wrong because he wanted to overtake another car, that led to the Nissan to collide with the bus head-to-head." The crash killed six people on the spot, with two more succumbing to injuries en route to the hospital, totaling eight deaths. All fatalities were passengers on the Loitoktok shuttle.

Dr. Daniel Katuya, Medical Superintendent at Machakos Level 5 Hospital, confirmed that 17 people were evacuated from the scene. "The survivors were treated and discharged," he stated. The injured survivor expressed relief amid pain: "I am experiencing pain in my chest and arms, even walking is difficult. I thank God because I was not among those who died."

Witnesses depicted a devastating scene with severely damaged vehicles and victims trapped in the wreckage. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) announced it is investigating the accident as survivors continue treatment.
