Activists and residents of Cozumel denounce that Royal Caribbean’s Royal Beach Club Cozumel project seeks to privatize the island’s last public beach on the west side.
Following the Semarnat rejection of the Perfect Day project in Mahahual on May 19, activists launched a Change.org petition that has collected more than 36,000 signatures.
The petition states that the new beach club in the Zona Hotelera Sur threatens free access to Playa Mía and will harm local businesses.
Royal Caribbean said the project will feature pools and restaurants for cruise passengers.
The company stated that current access will remain open and construction will start only after all environmental permits are secured.
Ari Adler Brotman, president of Royal Caribbean México, said the goal is to ensure beach access for everyone in line with Mexican law.
