Alabama mother charged with child abuse after baby dies

An Alabama woman has been arrested after police said she left her infant son alone at home while she went to work and found him dead upon her return.

Ja'Keisa Knox, 29, was taken into custody Tuesday at the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a charge of child abuse. Authorities said she left her 9-month-old son unattended for about eight hours after departing her apartment at 8 a.m.

Knox called police at 4 p.m. after finding the boy unresponsive. She told deputies she was the sole caregiver and no one else was expected to check on the child. The infant was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Hospital staff reported several injuries on the boy along with signs of malnourishment and low weight. The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office Violent Crimes Unit is investigating, and additional charges may follow the autopsy results. Knox remains held without bond.
