Meta to cut 10 percent of its workforce

Meta plans to lay off about 8,000 employees, representing roughly 10 percent of its staff, and eliminate around 6,000 open positions. The move comes as part of efforts to operate more efficiently, according to an internal memo from the company's head of human resources. This follows earlier job reductions in its Reality Labs division and metaverse operations.

Meta announced a significant reduction in its workforce, targeting about 10 percent of employees. The cuts will affect approximately 8,000 people, with an additional 6,000 open jobs being eliminated, as reported by Bloomberg. Janelle Gale, Meta's head of human resources, outlined the changes in an internal memo sent to staff on Wednesday. The memo stated that the layoffs are part of our continued effort to run the company more efficiently and to allow us to offset the other investments we’re making. Officials indicated these investments focus on areas like artificial intelligence, including model development and enhancements for products such as smart glasses. This is not the first round of reductions at Meta this year. In recent months, the company cut hundreds of positions primarily in its Reality Labs division. It also began 2026 by closing three VR studios as part of scaling back metaverse operations. A March report had suggested Meta might downsize by up to 20 percent overall, though no specific timeline was provided at the time.
