A Swedish firm has used Meltio technology to produce exclusive stainless steel exhaust pipes for a 2003 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.
Ferrita Sweden AB developed the exhaust system to improve the performance and sound of the V8-powered vehicle. The company turned to Meltio’s laser wire deposition after 3D scanning the car and testing plastic prototypes.
The four pipes were produced in four to five hours in stainless steel with complex geometry that includes the McLaren logo silhouette. The process cut time and cost by about 50 percent compared with traditional methods.
The new system replaced the original 20-kilogram silencer, achieving significant weight savings. Viktor, a Ferrita technician, noted that the technology enables internal shapes impossible to achieve with conventional welding.
