The Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Power of the Federation (TEPJF) revoked the INE's decision to dismiss a complaint regarding the CSP acronyms used by the organization Construyendo Sociedades de Paz to register as a political party. This action addresses a coincidence with President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo's initials. The TEPJF instructed the INE to thoroughly analyze the case and apply temporary precautionary measures.
On February 20, the Superior Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Power of the Federation (TEPJF), by unanimous vote, revoked the dismissal issued by the Contentious Electoral Technical Unit (UTCE) of the National Electoral Institute (INE) regarding a complaint filed by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. The complaint challenges the use of the acronyms “CSP” by the organization Construyendo Sociedades de Paz, which seeks to establish itself as a national political party and matches the president's initials.
The INE had previously rejected precautionary measures for the organization to change its name or avoid those initials, limiting itself to a formal review without assessing potential harms to third-party rights. The TEPJF, on the proposal of Magistrate Felipe Alfredo Fuentes Barrera, criticized this lack of comprehensive analysis and ordered the INE to rule on all elements of the complaint, including the request for precautions.
As a precautionary measure, the organization must use its full name and refrain from using “CSP” until the INE decides. This marks the third attempt by the Social Encounter Party (PES) to become a party, led by Morena's plurinominal deputy Hugo Éric Flores.
President Sheinbaum, in her morning press conference the previous Friday, stated: “How can an organization use the president's acronyms? [...] It cannot be used.” She assured that the federal government will use all legal avenues to prevent the PES from employing her initials in this new entity. The TEPJF stressed that its resolution does not prejudge the merits of the case, which the INE must resolve in the first instance.
