ActionSA has expressed deep disappointment that National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza opted not to oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa’s interdict application at the Western Cape High Court over the impeachment process.
ActionSA has strongly criticised the decision and is demanding that Parliament defend its constitutional independence and actively oppose the President’s attempt to halt the process.
ActionSA MP Athol Trollip says the party is not surprised by Didiza’s decision as history is repeating itself.
“No, we are not surprised, we are very disappointed, but we are not surprised. We as the impeachment committee instructed the chairperson on Thursday that he should oppose the interdict and that the chairperson should meet with the Speaker to encourage her to do the same. We are not surprised because this is like déjà vu. She and her predecessor have done exactly the same with Jacob Zuma with Nkandla and Ramaphosa with initial response to the Section 89 independent panel report and now Thoko Didiza is doing it again. It’s simply untenable, unacceptable and very disappointing.”
