In 1999, producers of the struggling series Baywatch explored relocating the show to Australia before ultimately settling on Hawaii. Local opposition in one Australian town played a key role in the decision. The move came as the program sought lower costs and fresh storylines after nine seasons.
By 1999, Baywatch had lost major star Pamela Anderson and faced declining viewership. Producers looked to cut expenses by leaving the Los Angeles area.
They first considered Avalon near Sydney, where they had already shot a two-episode special. Roughly 1,700 residents protested at a town hall meeting, citing beach access issues and harm to wildlife. One local said, "We've just about lost all our koalas in the area already."
Executive producer Gregory Bonann stated the show would not film where it was unwanted. Other Australian cities including Geelong and Coffs Harbour expressed interest, yet Hawaii offered a $3 million incentive package.
The series relocated and was renamed Baywatch Hawaii for seasons 10 and 11. It featured Jason Momoa in his breakout role but ended after two seasons.
