Pumunta sa Prague si DOJ chief Vida para sa pagbabalik ni Zaldy Co

Umalis si Kalihim ng Katarungan Fredderick Vida patungong Czech Republic noong Huwebes, Abril 23, upang ihatid pabalik si Zaldy Co, na na-detenido dahil sa hindi kumpletong dokumento. Walang extradition treaty ang Pilipinas at Czech Republic, kaya gagamitin ang UN Convention Against Corruption. Mga Czech opisyal ay nagsasabing maagang yugto pa ang kaso.

Na-detenido si Zaldy Co, dating kinatawan ng Ako Bicol party-list, sa border ng Czech-German dahil sa hindi kumpletong dokumento, posibleng European passport. Kinuha ng mga pulis ng Czech ang kustodiya niya, ngunit hindi pa nakakarating ang kaso sa Prague. Ayon sa tagapagsalita ng Czech Justice Ministry na si Marketa Androva, wala pang impormasyon ang kanilang opisina at sinusuri pa ng pulisya ang mga pangyayari.

Sinabi ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos, "We will bring Zaldy Co home and we will do so in accordance with the law. He will answer to the Filipino people." Si Vida ay naniniwala na hindi tatanggapin ng Czech Republic ang pagtatago ng mga akusado sa korupsyon, batay sa UN Convention Against Corruption, partikular ang Article 44 para sa extradition at Article 46 para sa legal assistance.

Kung hindi maaprubahan ang extradition, maaaring deportahin si Co dahil sa paglabag sa immigration law, ayon kay International law professor Rodel Taton. May precedent ito, tulad ng pagpunta ni dating DOJ Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla sa Timor-Leste para kay Arnolfo Teves noong Oktubre 2024, na na-deport noong Mayo 2025. Maaaring humingi rin si Co ng asylum upang maantala ang proseso.

Hanggang ngayon, walang senyales ng agarang paghahatid kay Co sa Pilipinas, ayon sa mga tagapagsalita ng Czech government.
