Hajiya Asiya El-Rufai has urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure her husband receives basic rights while in detention, citing his support during the 2023 campaign.
Hajiya Asiya El-Rufai, wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, made the appeal on Tuesday evening in Abuja. She spoke after the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission arrested her husband’s personal physician, Prof. Bello Abubakar.
She reminded President Tinubu of the couple’s campaign efforts in Kaduna State that contributed to his 2023 victory. Asiya stated that the family seeks no interference in legal proceedings but requests access to medical care, lawyers, and reasonable bail.
She alleged that El-Rufai, who has high blood pressure and high blood sugar, has been denied treatment and that visits by relatives and doctors are restricted. The African Democratic Congress also said on Tuesday that El-Rufai was denied medical care.
Asiya called for a fair process, saying: “If he is guilty, let the court decide; if he is innocent, let the court decide.”
