Buenos Aires city government chief Jorge Macri unveiled a package of measures to modernize private passenger transport. The changes aim to boost safety, cut red tape for taxi drivers and set clear rules for drivers on platforms such as Uber, Cabify and DiDi.
The announcement was made Thursday afternoon during a meeting with representatives of the Taxi Union and app companies. Jorge Macri said the previous system had piled up absurd requirements that left taxis at a disadvantage.
Key changes for taxis include allowing vehicles with up to eight seats, lowering the minimum passenger capacity to four and ending fixed shifts, uniform rules and the need for a notary in license transfers. Credentials will go digital and renewal fees will drop.
Ride-hailing drivers must now hold a professional license and be over 21. Vehicles will require a valid technical inspection and specific insurance approved by the National Insurance Superintendency. A 90-day adaptation period was granted.
