LeBron James rejoined the Los Angeles Lakers for practice on Monday, marking his first session with the team this season after missing the opening month due to sciatica. The 40-year-old star is questionable for Tuesday's game against the Utah Jazz as he assesses his body's response. This return comes as the Lakers hold a strong 10-4 record despite multiple injuries.
LeBron James, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, participated in his first practice with the Los Angeles Lakers on November 17, 2025, following a reassignment from the team's G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. He had been sidelined since late September due to sciatica, a nerve condition causing pain from the lower back down the leg, which he first experienced during the offseason two years ago. James ramped up with multiple practices and 5-on-5 sessions last week in the G League before rejoining the main roster.
James expressed cautious optimism after the session. "Just trying to get back to where I feel like myself again," he said. "Got to see how the body responds over the next 24 hours-plus." He added, "My lungs feel like a newborn baby... Feels good to be out here with the guys. Missed them." On the pain, James noted, "I had it two years ago. If you've had it then you know what the hell it's about... I pray you never get it. It's not fun." He clarified he is not entirely pain-free but has managed it with exercises and mobility work.
Lakers coach JJ Redick described the practice as the first with all 14 players available this season, calling it exciting. James' status for Tuesday's home game against the Utah Jazz remains to be determined, alongside Gabe Vincent, who is recovering from an ankle injury. The Lakers face the Jazz again on Sunday in Salt Lake City.
Despite James' absence, the Lakers have started 10-4, sitting fourth in the Western Conference. Key contributors include Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, who have missed games but stepped up offensively, along with new center Deandre Ayton. Last season, James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game, helping the team to 50 wins.
South Bay Lakers coach Zach Guthrie reflected on James' G League stint: "To have the greatest player of all time join your practice... it's an unbelievable experience." He highlighted James' practice habits as inspirational for younger players.
James' debut will make him the first player to appear in 23 NBA seasons.
