More delayed passenger trains in January

Passenger train punctuality worsened significantly in January compared to December, according to Trafikverket. Harsh weather, mainly snowstorms, was behind the increased delays. 85 percent of trains arrived on time, a drop of 6.9 percentage points.

In January 2026, punctuality for passenger trains in Sweden declined markedly. According to Trafikverket, 85 percent of the over 91,000 commuter, regional, and long-distance trains arrived on time, defined as no more than five minutes after schedule. This was 6.9 percentage points lower than in December 2025, which was the previous year's most punctual month, and 1.8 percentage points lower than in January 2025.

At the same time, 94 percent of passenger trains arrived no later than 15 minutes after schedule. Canceled departures are not included in the statistics.

"The main reason for the increased delays for passengers was several snowstorms that affected both the infrastructure and the trains," says department head Thomas Andersson in a press release from Trafikverket.

Trafikverket points to the harsh weather as the primary cause of the deterioration. Compared to December, when punctuality was higher, the figures show a clear impact from winter weather conditions. The statistics are based on scheduled departures and exclude canceled trains.
