A New Jersey county judge faces removal from the bench after making threats to involve immigration authorities during truancy hearings involving minors. The state's Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct issued its recommendation last week.
Britt J. Simon, who served as a judge in Bound Brook Municipal Court and for Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren counties, was suspended in February 2025. The committee's June 10 decision cited his comments during hearings in August 2024 and January 2025.
Simon told one 16-year-old boy to look at his mother and prepare to say goodbye because of potential deportation. He warned a 14-year-old that missing another school day would lead to ICE picking the student up.
The committee found that Simon's actions, including threats of family separation, violated judicial ethics. It recommended removal, rejecting lesser penalties proposed by a minority of members. Simon had admitted to some allegations in August 2025 but maintained that his statements were empty threats intended to correct behavior.
