A previously unknown monkey species has been confirmed in a remote area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The animal, known locally as likweli, has been given the scientific name Colobus congoensis.
Researchers documented the species through observations between 2018 and 2022, including vocalisation recordings and analysis of specimens confiscated from hunters in 2021. Genetic tests showed the monkey split from its closest relative about 4 to 5 million years ago.
Kate Detwiler of Florida Atlantic University led the team that described the animal. She noted its distinctive light-coloured facial skin and strong body odour. The species is known from just 1700 square kilometres of rainforest.
Hunting for bushmeat poses the main threat to the small population. The researchers have proposed listing the monkey as endangered and granting it legal protection under national law.
