A tanker truck carrying propane gas overturned today on the A-8 highway near Colunga in Asturias. The incident forced the evacuation of 80 homes in the Lua area and triggered a major emergency response.
The accident occurred around 10:39 a.m. at kilometer 344 of the A-8 heading toward Cantabria. The driver was injured and taken to Cabueñes Hospital in Gijón after initial treatment at the scene.
Firefighters from SEPA contained the gas leak three hours after the incident. After confirming safety with an explosimeter, the one-thousand-meter perimeter was lifted and evacuated residents returned home.
The Guardia Civil deployed eleven patrols to coordinate the evacuation of around seventy people to the municipal sports center in Colunga. The PLAMERPA plan was activated at Situation 1 and later downgraded to Situation 0.
Traffic on the A-8 was restored after 1:35 p.m., although National Road 632 remains closed until the truck is removed.
