Supreme Court directs petitioners to approach Calcutta High Court on West Bengal ration issue

The Supreme Court on June 23, 2026, told petitioners to first approach the Calcutta High Court over a West Bengal order that links Special Intensive Revision outcomes to access to subsidised ration and nutrition schemes.

A Bench headed by Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice Joymalya Bagchi heard the matter. The Paschim Banga Khet Majoor Samity argued that a June 4 government order had tied Public Distribution System and Annapurna Yojana benefits to voter list revisions under the Special Intensive Revision.

The petitioners said the linkage could affect 35 lakh to 60 lakh people by inactivating ration cards without a hearing. They contended that such classifications from electoral exercises are foreign to the National Food Security Act, 2013.

The Bench observed that it must first determine whether the cause of action arose from the SIR exercise or other policy reasons. It advised the petitioners to move the Calcutta High Court.
