A Thai woman appeared in a Myanmar court on Thursday on murder charges in the death of an American diplomat in Yangon.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was charged with murder and an immigration code violation that applies to foreign nationals committing crimes in Myanmar. She faces a possible sentence of 10 years in prison to the death penalty if convicted.
The diplomat was found dead on May 11 at the Sakura Residence & Hotel, about one mile from the American Embassy. He had suffered stab wounds to the head and neck. The U.S. State Department confirmed the death but provided no further details, including the victim's name.
The hearing took place in Kamayut Township Court. It was unclear if the woman entered a plea or had legal representation. Thailand's foreign ministry said it is providing consular assistance to the woman but offered no details on legal support.
Myanmar has been under military rule since 2021. Authorities at the court, prison and police declined to comment on the case.
