Their recent 4-2 victory over the Florida Panthers extended a three-game win streak, underscoring the momentum under head coach Rick Bowness, who has guided the team to a 13-2-1 record since his appointment on January 12.
Garland, a 29-year-old winger from Scituate, Massachusetts, brings veteran scoring to Columbus. In 50 games this season with Vancouver, he recorded 7 goals and 19 assists for 26 points, though his production reflects the Canucks' last-place standing and ongoing rebuild. Over his NHL career spanning 535 games with the Arizona Coyotes and Vancouver, Garland averages 20 goals, 29 assists, and 49 points per 82 games. At 5-foot-10 and 165 pounds, he plays with notable competitiveness, strength, and skating ability, often excelling in puck battles and tight spaces. He also demonstrated toughness, such as in 2019 when he returned from a facial injury to score after a goal deflected off his face.
Waddell highlighted Garland's fit as a middle-six forward who can contribute to the top two lines. "We wanted to add a forward, someone that could score and help the top six, the top two lines," Waddell said. The acquisition includes Garland's six-year, $6 million AAV contract extension, which begins next season and runs through 2032, providing cost certainty amid rising salary caps. This long-term commitment aligns with Waddell's shift from potential seller to buyer, influenced by the team's turnaround. Last year, additions like Luke Kunin and Christian Fischer had minimal impact, but Waddell views Garland as a more significant boost.
Players echoed the optimism. Forward Mathieu Olivier stated, "Yeah, absolutely... We’re playing for playoffs, and we’re getting ready for playoffs... every game is a must-win for us, and it’s a playoff mentality." Goalie Jet Greaves added, "I think it’s such a close group in here... We care about it a lot and care about each other a lot and trying to find a way to get in the playoffs, we’re excited about the opportunity."
Garland's ties to the roster—junior hockey with Olivier, the 2025 World Championships gold medal with Zach Werenski, and Boston-area roots with Charlie Coyle—should aid his integration.
