Boots Riley a déclaré que Cannes a rejeté son nouveau film I Love Boosters ainsi que plusieurs de ses projets précédents. Le réalisateur a partagé ces commentaires sur X après avoir été interrogé sur son choix de présenter le film en avant-première au SXSW à la place.

Riley a écrit que Cannes a refusé I Love Boosters, ainsi que son long métrage de 2018 Sorry To Bother You et la série comique I’m a Virgo. Il a noté que le festival a sélectionné The Idol plutôt que I’m a Virgo et a choisi d'autres titres qui avaient été projetés dans leur pays d'origine tout en ignorant son travail. "Ils n'aiment tout simplement pas ce que je fais. Tout va bien", a-t-il ajouté dans sa publication.
