Un réseau d'extorsion menace un versement de 14 milliards de KES de la Co-op Bank aux agriculteurs

Un réseau d'extorsion présumé fait l'objet d'une enquête policière pour avoir utilisé de faux documents judiciaires afin de menacer le versement de 14 milliards de KES par la Co-operative Bank aux agriculteurs et aux actionnaires des Sacco.

Le groupe est accusé d'avoir déposé des requêtes pour bloquer la restructuration de la banque en une société holding non opérationnelle nommée Co-opbank Group PLC, annoncée par le PDG, le Dr Gideon Muriuki, le 21 avril. Un homme politique aurait approché la banque au nom de coopératives et envoyé des lettres de mise en demeure ainsi que des projets de poursuites, suivis d'invitations à des pourparlers privés interprétés comme des tentatives d'extorsion de fonds en échange du retrait des plaintes.

La police examine les allégations selon lesquelles les signatures de véritables responsables de Sacco auraient été falsifiées sans autorisation. La restructuration, en attente des approbations de la Banque centrale du Kenya et de l'Autorité des marchés financiers, permettrait de créer Co-opbank Group PLC en tant que société mère cotée en bourse et une nouvelle filiale appelée Co-Op Bank Kenya Ltd pour les opérations locales.

Des sources internes à la banque affirment que ces dépôts visent à entraver le processus après que les plans de versement ont été rendus publics.
