Maple Leafs recall Pezzetta for debut against Ducks

The Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled forward Michael Pezzetta from the AHL's Toronto Marlies ahead of their home game against the Anaheim Ducks on March 12, 2026. Pezzetta, a lifelong Leafs fan who signed with the team in the offseason, is set to make his debut after spending time in the minors due to injury and a crowded roster. Coach Craig Berube sees him as a potential energy boost for the struggling team.

Michael Pezzetta, a 27-year-old forward from Toronto, signed a two-year, $1.63-million contract with the Maple Leafs on Canada Day, drawn by his boyhood passion for the team. Featuring photos of heroes like Mats Sundin and Curtis Joseph on his wall, Pezzetta expressed excitement about joining the club, saying, “It’s hard not to cheer for the Leafs, being from Toronto. I can’t even explain how stoked I am right now.” He described his style as a hard-to-play-against forechecker who can change the energy of a shift with hits and defensive responsibility.

Despite high hopes, Pezzetta was sent to the AHL's Toronto Marlies before the season started due to an underwhelming preseason and competition for fourth-line spots. There, he recorded four goals, 10 points, and 52 penalty minutes in 37 games while playing a checking role. His recall comes after the Leafs traded three depth forwards at the deadline and called up prospects like Bo Groulx and Jacob Quillan, who impressed in a recent game against Montreal.

The timing aligns with the Maple Leafs' ongoing struggles, including an eight-game losing skid and a 3-1 loss to the Canadiens on March 10, where William Nylander scored his 22nd goal of the season on a six-game point streak. Joseph Woll made 30 saves in that defeat. Now, with the team holding a 16-11-7 home record, Pezzetta is projected to play on the fourth line with Quillan and David Järnkrok against the Ducks, whom Toronto went 2-0-0 against last season.

Berube noted at morning skate, “We’re gonna look at guys down there. He’s one of the guys that we wanted to see… for a little while now.” Upon learning of his debut, Pezzetta said, “I’m super stoked.” The game tips off at Scotiabank Arena, where Pezzetta aims to bring the edge the roster needs as the lottery-bound Leafs play out their remaining 17 games.
