Le cavalier de concours complet Sam Watson a suggéré la création d'une nouvelle voie d'accès au niveau cinq étoiles afin de remédier à la baisse du nombre de partants lors des épreuves majeures du Mars Badminton et du Defender Burghley.

Badminton a enregistré 61 partants en 2026, son total le plus bas depuis plus de 20 ans. Burghley a compté 52 partants en 2025, égalant son chiffre le plus bas depuis au moins deux décennies. Watson a souligné une baisse de 36,9 % des épreuves préparatoires au format long entre 2014/2015 et 2024/2025, tandis que les épreuves au format court n'ont reculé que de 2,9 %.
