Der Vielseitigkeitsreiter Sam Watson hat den Vorschlag unterbreitet, einen neuen Fünf-Sterne-Qualifikationsweg zu schaffen, um dem Rückgang der Starterzahlen bei den Großereignissen Mars Badminton und Defender Burghley entgegenzuwirken.

Badminton verzeichnete im Jahr 2026 61 Starter, die niedrigste Gesamtzahl seit mehr als 20 Jahren. Burghley hatte 2025 52 Starter, was dem niedrigsten Wert der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte entspricht. Watson stellte zwischen 2014/2015 und 2024/2025 einen Rückgang der Long-Format-Vorbereitungsturniere um 36,9 Prozent fest, während die Anzahl der Short-Format-Turniere nur um 2,9 Prozent zurückging.
