Aid streamlined for Gamo zone landslide victims

Ethiopia's Southern region finance bureau says aid for residents affected by a landslide in Gamo Zone has been streamlined. The bureau held discussions with civil society groups on coordinating victim support.

Addis Ababa, March 9, 2018 (Fana) - The finance bureau of Ethiopia's Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region states that aid for residents hit by a landslide in Gamo Zone has been streamlined. Bureau head of planning and administration Tefere Abate held a meeting with civil society organizations to discuss aid coordination for victims. Tefere noted that government institutions and private entities have been providing various forms of support. The bureau urged civil society groups to play their roles and called on government bodies, private organizations, and others to channel cash and in-kind aid directly. Among those aiding victims are the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary something league, Welaita Zone and town administration volunteers, Southern Ethiopia universities forum, Dilla cluster regional institutions, and the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. Private groups including Belayneh Kindie Group, Aniyar Trading, Abyssinia Bank, Orbi International Ethiopia, and others have contributed cash and material aid.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh, Oromia President Shumelis Abdisa, and National Bank Governor Eyob Tekalgn visited development works and inaugurated projects in Wellega zones of Oromia region on the same day. Projects including the Busa Gonofa integrated food industry complex and Geter Corridor development were highlighted as key for agro-industry, job creation, and economic growth.

Ethiopia's National Disaster Risk Management Commission's central command delivered 100 quintals of grain to households hit by landslides in Gamo Zone's various woredas. Zone officials contributed cash and supplies as well.

In ongoing relief efforts for the Gamo Zone landslide, Central Ethiopia Regional State has donated 10 million birr in aid, including food, non-food items, and shelter materials. Regional President Dr. Tasu announced the support to show solidarity with victims.

The Ministry of Social Affairs has set up 30 public kitchens in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra to serve over 80,000 food portions daily for flood and landslide victims. Deputy Interior Minister Bima Arya visited disaster sites in Padang Pariaman and Solok, emphasizing swift logistics distribution per President Prabowo Subianto's instructions. Various ministries are also providing emergency internet, basic needs aid, and civil registry services.

Oromia region's chief administrator Awelu Abdi stated that service delivery has improved through ongoing works. This includes establishing new kebele structures and urban one-stop service centers, enhancing citizen satisfaction. Efforts to maintain peace have also been highlighted.

In an update to the flash floods and landslides affecting Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra since late November 2025—which have now claimed 1,129 lives—the Indonesian government has approved direct cash assistance (BLT) of at least Rp8 million per affected family for home rehabilitation and economic recovery, excluding separate death benefits and logistics support.
