BPOM finds 14 cosmetics containing hazardous ingredients

The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency followed up on 14 cosmetics containing hazardous or prohibited ingredients found during second-quarter 2026 supervision.

BPOM head Taruna Ikrar said of the 14 products 11 were local items made under contract manufacturing one was imported and two lacked distribution permits.

The hazardous ingredients found include retinoic acid hydroquinone mercury red dye Clobetasol propionate and mometasone furoate.

Taruna explained mercury can cause skin discoloration allergic reactions irritation headaches diarrhea and vomiting while retinoic acid risks altering fetal organ formation in pregnant women.

Follow-up actions taken include revocation of distribution permits strong warnings orders for withdrawal and destruction and temporary suspension of activities.

A study published in *Nature Health* reports a statistical link between environmental exposure to mixtures of agricultural pesticides and higher cancer risk in Peru. Using modeled pesticide dispersion from 2014 to 2019 and cancer registry data from 2007 to 2020 covering more than 150,000 cases, researchers found that people living in high-exposure areas faced, on average, about a 150% higher likelihood of cancer, with Indigenous and rural farming communities among those most exposed.

The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency has revoked distribution permits for 11 cosmetic products found to contain hazardous and prohibited substances following inspections in the first quarter of 2026.
