Chandhok warns Red Bull to sign big name after Lambiase exit

Formula 1 analyst Karun Chandhok has warned Red Bull to secure a high-profile signing following Gianpiero Lambiase's departure to McLaren. The former race engineer for Max Verstappen will join McLaren as chief racing officer by 2028. Red Bull sits sixth in the constructors' standings after a tough start to the 2026 season.

Gianpiero Lambiase, known as GP and long-time race engineer for four-time champion Max Verstappen, has left Red Bull. He is set to move to McLaren in Woking as chief racing officer by 2028, marking another high-profile exit from the Milton Keynes-based team under Laurent Mekies' leadership. Lambiase's departure comes amid other personnel changes at Red Bull. Karun Chandhok, a former F1 driver and Sky Sports analyst, discussed the situation on the Sky Sports F1 Show. He urged Red Bull to make a 'big name signing' not just for expertise, but to halt further losses and draw talent from rivals. 'Right now, you want to attract people from Mercedes. They're the ones winning,' Chandhok said, noting Mercedes' dominance in the first three rounds of 2026. He warned that good engineers attract others, referencing how Lambiase might lure colleagues to McLaren. 'How long before GP starts calling the other 20 people... 'Hey, you know what guys, this place down at Woking, this is a really nice place to work',' Chandhok added, comparing it to moves by Adrian Newey and Ross Brawn. Red Bull has struggled early in the season, holding 16 points and sixth place in the constructors' standings after three races.

McLaren has confirmed the signing of Gianpiero Lambiase, Max Verstappen's long-time race engineer at Red Bull, as its chief racing officer no later than 2028. Red Bull verified that Lambiase will depart when his contract expires at the end of 2027. The move follows McLaren's previous hires of other Red Bull personnel.

Max Verstappen has backed his long-time race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase's decision to join McLaren as chief racing officer in 2028, following last week's announcement. Lambiase consulted Verstappen beforehand, who called it an 'incredible opportunity.' Ex-F1 driver David Coulthard foresees challenges for Red Bull in managing Lambiase until his contract ends.

Dr Helmut Marko has assumed an ambassadorial role with the Red Bull Ring, host of the Austrian Grand Prix scheduled for 26-28 June. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has dismissed speculation about Max Verstappen's waning motivation for the 2026 Formula 1 cars, following the driver's renewed criticism after the Australian Grand Prix. This comes after Verstappen's earlier pre-season testing jabs labeling the regs 'Formula E on steroids.' Mercedes' Toto Wolff also signaled openness to tweaks for better racing.

Former Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner has stated that the decision to demote Liam Lawson after two races in the 2025 Formula 1 season and replace him with Yuki Tsunoda was not his own. Speaking in the eighth season of Netflix's Drive to Survive, Horner attributed the move to pressure from Helmut Marko. The abrupt change highlighted ongoing turbulence within the team.

Lewis Hamilton has described the decision to part ways with his race engineer Riccardo Adami as very difficult ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The seven-time world champion will work with an interim engineer for the early races, calling the lack of a permanent replacement detrimental. He expressed gratitude for Adami's efforts during a challenging 2025 campaign at Ferrari.
