Huduma Kenya says smart driving licences take 4 to 8 weeks

Huduma Kenya has clarified that smart driving licence processing takes 4 to 8 weeks at a cost of KSh3,050. This responds to a public query but contrasts NTSA's prior statement of about five days. Motorists have complained of delays since January 2026.

Huduma Kenya has announced that processing smart driving licences takes between four and eight weeks. The statement followed an online user's question: 'Changing old driving licence to digital, how much is it and how long will it take to get it?'. Huduma Kenya replied: 'Hello, Ksh3,050, and it takes 4 to 8 weeks.' The fee matches the Traffic Act, but the timeline has sparked debate as NTSA previously stated processing occurs in about five days, not exceeding three weeks. This discrepancy raises questions on potential delays from high application volumes, system issues, or production and distribution logistics. Applicants must use the NTSA portal for submission and payment, and sometimes visit centres for biometric capture. Complaints from motorists have grown since January 2026, with many seeking updates via the NTSA portal without clear responses. The government has introduced digital services to boost efficiency, yet such inconsistencies may erode public trust.

The Kenya Transporters Association (KTA) has called for the immediate rollout of an on-the-spot traffic fine system payable through mobile money platforms, aiming to eliminate the conventional court-based enforcement that it describes as costly and inefficient. The group argues this would ease court backlogs and boost road safety. The proposal arrives as the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) prepares to launch instant fines amid Kenya's push toward digitized services.

The Kenya Wildlife Service has reduced entry fees for students visiting several national parks and reserves. The offer runs through the end of July and includes some free admissions for groups. It contrasts with recent price increases at museums across the country.
