Ideam alerts on higher than normal temperatures in may

Ideam reported a generalized rise in maximum temperatures during the first week of May, with values near or above historical records in several regions of the country.

The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies warned of persistent warm conditions, especially in the Caribbean region, San Andrés and some interior municipalities. Cities such as Valledupar recorded 38 °C, exceeding its monthly historical average by 3.8 °C.

The report detailed increases in Barrancabermeja, Cúcuta, Medellín and Bogotá, where a maximum of 22.2 °C was reached on May 5. The number of alerts for vegetation fires also rose, with 24 municipalities under red alert.

According to Ideam, an anticyclonic system will maintain clear skies and high temperatures at least until the beginning of the week of May 11 to 17. A gradual increase in cloudiness and decrease in maximum temperatures is expected from May 12 and 13.

The institute also anticipates that in May much of the country will have rainfall below normal values, especially in the Andean, Caribbean and Pacific regions.
