Dr Samuel Oyola has received a Sh187 million grant from the Gates Foundation to develop an AI-powered public health system.

Dr Samuel Oyola heads genomics science at the International Livestock Research Institute. He received the funds equivalent to 1.45 million US dollars.

The project will use artificial intelligence to predict disease outbreaks and monitor drug-resistant pathogens. Researchers will collect wastewater samples from 30 sites in Kisumu and Mombasa.

The research began during the coronavirus pandemic. Dr Oyola said that during that period they discovered it is possible to detect some pathogens through wastewater. He will collaborate with two PhD students.
