MUI deputy chairman Cholil Nafis stated that the term subsidy for Hajj costs is inaccurate as funds come from pilgrims themselves.
Cholil Nafis emphasized that Hajj financing should return to the principle of manistaṭā'a ilaihi sabīlā. He was responding to the government's proposal on the 2027 Hajj implementation costs.
The government proposed BPIH 2027 at Rp107.34 million per person. The suggested scheme includes 60 percent from BPKH managed returns and 40 percent from BIPIH paid directly by pilgrims.
According to Cholil, there is no subsidy from the state budget. The funds are the result of investment on pilgrims' initial deposits during the waiting period. He also called for a fairer distribution of benefits to all prospective pilgrims including those still on the waiting list.
