Nationals trade Robert Hassell III to Pirates

The Washington Nationals traded outfielder Robert Hassell III to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations or a player to be named later.

Hassell, selected eighth overall in the 2020 draft, was acquired by the Nationals as part of the 2022 trade that sent Juan Soto to the San Diego Padres. He made his major league debut on May 22, 2025, and hit .223 across 70 games last season.

The 24-year-old struggled this year at Triple-A Rochester, where he posted a .215/.304/.289 slash line with two home runs in 63 games. The Nationals designated him for assignment on July 5 before completing the trade.

Pittsburgh has acquired outfielders from Washington before, including Joshua Palacios via the 2022 Rule 5 draft.
