TKMS receives major order from Canada for up to twelve submarines

ThyssenKrupp subsidiary TKMS received an order from Canada in early July for up to twelve Type 212CD submarines. The volume is estimated at up to 100 billion Canadian dollars.

The order from Ottawa has caused jubilation at the federal government, state governments and the company. It is seen as a sign of greater independence from the USA and a more stable German defense capability.

As recently as 2024 the marine division faced economic problems. After the IPO in October 2025 the company separated from the parent group. The then federal government negotiated state participation to preserve the site.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Monday evening that German shipyard TKMS will supply up to twelve submarines. The company prevailed against a South Korean competitor.

The government has signed agreements on state support and co-ownership in Videberg Kraft to build three new reactors at Ringhals. The state will take 60 percent ownership in the company.
