TKMS receives major order from Canada for up to twelve submarines

ThyssenKrupp subsidiary TKMS received an order from Canada in early July for up to twelve Type 212CD submarines. The volume is estimated at up to 100 billion Canadian dollars.

The order from Ottawa has caused jubilation at the federal government, state governments and the company. It is seen as a sign of greater independence from the USA and a more stable German defense capability.

TKMS chief Oliver Burkhard looks from his Kiel office at a fully packed order book. Another major order could follow by the end of the year.

As recently as 2024 the marine division faced economic problems. After the IPO in October 2025 the company separated from the parent group. The then federal government negotiated state participation to preserve the site.
