Elina Svitolina, the world No. 9, has expressed acceptance of a career without a Grand Slam title, crediting motherhood for providing a new perspective on her achievements. The Ukrainian player returned to the top 10 after reaching the Australian Open semifinal in 2026, her fourth at a major. She discussed her refreshed mindset ahead of the Qatar TotalEnergies Open.
Elina Svitolina's journey in professional tennis has been marked by consistent excellence, including a former world No. 3 ranking and multiple Grand Slam semifinals, yet no major title. In a recent interview after her Australian Open semifinal loss to Aryna Sabalenka, the 31-year-old Ukrainian opened up about reconciling with this reality. "Before, this was a very sensitive topic," Svitolina said. "When you’re very young and you’ve been Top 3 for…a couple of years and you’re a favorite for a Grand Slam but you never make it, it’s very tough." She noted that motherhood, following the birth of her daughter Skaï in October 2022, shifted her priorities. "But I think after giving birth and having different perspectives, I accepted this idea that I am ok to live my life after tennis and not having won a Grand Slam," she added. "I’ve still had a very solid career on my shoulders and I did my very best."
Svitolina's 2026 season began strongly, with 11 wins in 12 matches, including her 19th WTA title in Auckland against Wang Xinyu. At the Australian Open, she advanced to the semifinals by defeating players like Mirra Andreeva and Coco Gauff, before falling 6-2, 6-3 to Sabalenka—her eighth straight set loss in major semifinals. This performance propelled her back into the top 10 at No. 9, her first since maternity leave in 2023.
The pressure of representing Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia and Belarus had weighed heavily, particularly after captaining the Billie Jean King Cup team to a disappointing result in 2025. Svitolina shut down her season early that September for an extended off-season with family, which she credits for reigniting her passion. "I was able to find myself again, finding this fire to come back, fight, and play with purpose," she said.
In Doha for the Qatar TotalEnergies Open, Svitolina started with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over compatriot Dayana Yastremska on February 11, 2026, after spending the morning with Skaï. She plans to face Anna Kalinskaya next, drawing on her 6-9 record at the event, where her best result was a 2019 semifinal loss to Simona Halep. Beyond the court, Svitolina aims to expand sports in Ukraine, including a tennis academy and padel club, to help her compatriots release stress from the conflict.
Despite her acceptance, Svitolina remains optimistic. "I feel like I have a chance," she stated, emphasizing her improved game and mental fitness. She also mentors emerging Ukrainian talent like Oleksandra Oliynykova, who challenged Madison Keys at the Australian Open.
