Lewis Hamilton urges less software reliance in Formula 1

Lewis Hamilton has called for reduced reliance on complex software in Formula 1, highlighting frustrations with energy management systems that penalise drivers for pushing their cars harder.

Speaking on the StarTalk podcast during the Miami Grand Prix weekend, the Ferrari driver explained how limited battery capacity and the removal of the MGU-H system create counterintuitive penalties.

"If you take the high-speed fast, if you're more committed and you take more risk and you go faster through a corner, you get penalised afterwards because you don't charge enough," Hamilton said.

He cited a recent example where software issues cost him three-tenths of a second, noting that engineers confirmed the problem after the session. Hamilton added that the sport needs less such complexity compared to earlier eras.

After nine rounds of the 2026 season, Hamilton sits third in the drivers' championship behind Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.
