Roland garros clay courts made from five specific layers

The red surface at Roland Garros consists of multiple layers beneath the visible brick dust. This construction has remained consistent for decades at the French Open.

The courts feature a drainage base covered by a 30cm layer of crushed gravel. Above that sits a 7-8cm layer of clinker, followed by 6-7cm of crushed limestone and a final 1-2mm coating of brick dust that produces the signature red color.
