Der rote Untergrund bei Roland Garros besteht aus mehreren Schichten unterhalb des sichtbaren Ziegelmehls. Dieser Aufbau ist bei den French Open seit Jahrzehnten unverändert.

Die Plätze verfügen über eine Drainageschicht, die mit einer 30 cm dicken Schicht aus Schotter bedeckt ist. Darüber befindet sich eine 7-8 cm dicke Schicht aus Klinker, gefolgt von 6-7 cm Kalksteinschotter und einer abschließenden 1-2 mm dicken Schicht aus Ziegelmehl, die für die charakteristische rote Farbe sorgt.
