Transtrandsmål, spoken in Malung-Sälen municipality, risks fading as few young people master the dialect.
Transtrands Besparingsskog annually awards scholarships to students who speak the dialect. This year only four pupils from year nine received the grant, while none from year three or six qualified. Gry Persson, 15, says she wants to preserve the dialect and teach it to her children. Arvid Svensson, also 15 and a recipient, notes that many young people use Swedish instead. Bo Eriksson, who works with the scholarship, worries the dialect may disappear within ten to twenty years. In neighbouring Älvdalen municipality, projects aim to strengthen Älvdalska among younger speakers and gain recognition as a language.
